ST IVES JUDO CLUB NEWS
The atmosphere at the club last Friday was exciting as the junior members waited anxiously for Neil Corin to arrive. Neil had been selected to go to Malta to fight in the international match staged there each year. Neils selection was due to his medal win at the senior national championships in Hereford earlier in the year, and attending the National squad training sessions in Birmingham.
The selectors decision to send the St Ives player was certainly good Judgement on their part, as Neil took the gold cup in his weight category ,and then won the highest award of the tournament the gold cup for the open.
Neils win at this prestigious tournament gives a fantastic boost to the club, and to Cornish Judo.
Unfortunately the Malta trip was brought forward one week by the organizers, clashing with the London International which Meant Neil was unable to take part. Neil is now training with the prestigious Ben Mesters competition in Holland in mind.
The club was represented at London by Jackson Warner, and Sarah Rowe, and in the Kata competition by Corina Trathan.
Sarah who won Gold last year, had to be content with the Bronze medal, but this was no mean achievement, fighting in a new weight category where she was at the lower end of the scale.
Jackson came fifth in his event a really good result, both the St Ives juniors were outstanding to achieve these results in an international event attracting 2000 entries, including some of the best players in Europe.
The standard of this competion which drew in world class competitors including the reigning Commonwealth champion from New Zealand, and one competitor from Rumania who traveled to the event on a motor bike was extremely high.
Everyone at the club was thrilled by the success of Corina Trathan, who Partnered with Rowan Ford of Redruth, took the silver medal in the Juno Kata competion.
This result was again a triumph for Cornwall as only the World Champions who are in training to defend their title in Japan this year beat them into second place.
Again this year, because of the size of the London International, all the Cornish clubs fought together under the name of St Perrin, and the Flag of St Perrin erected in the huge sports hall made a rallying place for all the Cornish supporters. This cooperation between the Cornish clubs probably will not continue during the forthcoming Cornish team Championships, but its heartening to see that we are,All for one and one for all, when we compete outside the County.
That a small club tucked away in the corner of the Country can achieve these results is remarkable, and must reflect the standard of teaching and community support.
Next weekend Mr A Hosaka is to hold an F P J 1 fundamental principals course at the club, Hosaka Sensei is a Kodokan 7th Dan and a respected teacher and former all Japan medallist.
The teams are on the following weekend and selection and weigh in will take place now,
Team coach will be Heather Farr and Heather will be pleased to welcome any old members back to train with the senior group who enjoy the Friday night training sessions at 8-15.
Last week Jake Parkinson was back on the mat as a senior, after a spell away, and the senior class is beginning to pick up steadily.
The Easter course should be another exciting event this year, with all the usual senior B J C heirachy attending , the president Senesei Robin OTani, will be in overall charge assisted by Sensei Hosaka,7th dan, plus Senseis, Mealing , Wyman, Couch, and Coles.all 6th dans .
Jane Bridge Britains first Ladies World champion has been invited to take classes, and will travel from France bringing some of her French Pupils.
John Smith will be bringing Steve Moss the past European, and British champion and a number of his fiends and training partners from Neil Adams centre of excellence.
It is hoped that this year more area people will take the opportunity to practice with these international players, Giving young Cornish people the chance to be taught and to practice with world class people is one of the main objectives of the course.
Putting on an event like the Easter course is an expensive Buisiness and entails a lot of hard work, but the benefits to the town and the club make it all worth while, the organizers are grateful for the help and cooperation they receive from Keith Varnals and the Hotel and guest house association, local and district councils and the support of local charitable organizations in putting on this course.
